Groovy-luxe, timeless and understated American clothes. Here is a simple design proposition that launched the career of American fashion designer Marc Jacobs in 1985. One of fashion’s most instrumental taste-makers, Jacobs’ design forte lies in his ability to marry downtown New York aesthetic with uptown sensibilities. He often takes something common and transforms it into something resolutely desirable, without sacrificing quality. Think thermal T-shirts but in the finest of cashmere. (It’s no irony that this is the man who invented Grunge, the art of looking penniless with platinum cards, in his 1992 collection for Perry Ellis.) Whether channelling glamorama, Studio 54-excess, sexiness or fun, the name Marc Jacobs is currently a byword for cool, affordable luxury. And high-profile fans like Sofia Coppola, Samantha Morton and Wynona Ryder have only served to reinforce the desirability of this label. “I like to design for a woman either that we know or that we fantasise about knowing,” Mr Jacobs once said of his ideal customer. “I know something will work when I can imagine someone I know running around it in.” Is it any surprise that every woman wants a piece by fashion’s hottest designer? The label also carries accessories, such as the label’s iconic Stam bag so named for his friend supermodel Jessica Stam, as well as jewellery, watches and fragrances.
