Giorgio Armani

A living legend. In the 1980s, Giorgio Armani exported a recognisable Italian style – the sophisticated, monochromatic grey-toned aesthetic of Italian industrial design – to the United States by contextualising it within cinematic notions of glamour. By doing so, he taught Hollywood how to dress old-school Italian glamour. (He’s possibly the only fashion designer to be thanked onstage at the Oscars, as he was in 1998 by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.) The Italian designer also engineered a seismic shift and re-defined menswear when he introduced the unstructured suit into mens’ wardrobe, handing the stiff grey flannel suit the death sentence. Here is a visionary with refined taste: Mr Armani radically changed contemporary fashion by deliberately paring down ornamental excesses and made simplicity a prized look. Effortlessly elegant and modern, it’s a design ethos that extends throughout the Giorgio Armani universe, which now comprises of various diffusion lines offering apparel and accessories, as well as, product extensions such as watches, fragrance, skincare, eyewear, and even lifestyle ventures like cafés, florists, bookstores and restaurants.
